85's v Ardmore Marist roundup

Wednesday 07 June 2017

What a great game of rugby we witnessed last Saturday at the Drury Domain.

Drury 85's were taking on their Ardmore Marist (AM) counterparts for the second time this season, and turned on a cracker. They are developing into quite the team, plenty of talent but not afraid of doing the hard yards and nearing top fitness as the end of season playoffs approach. With only four games (five weeks) to go, things are looking good.

It was another glorious afternoon weatherwise, although overnight rain had left some large ares of surface water for the two teams to navigate through. AM had first use of the wind but initiually seemed determined to keep the ball in hand and run. Some fine tackling and counterattacking play from Drury saw the game going from end to end, with both teams unlucky not to dot down. Two penalties and a yellow card for Drury had AM up 6-0 at the break.

Soon after the restart, with a man still in the bin (not sure) AM crossed for an easy try under the posts and moved ahead 13-0 with the conversion. That seemed to be the spark that ignited this Drury team, and from then on they dominated. With the majority share of the ball (AM kept giving it back) the forwards took it to AM with plenty of pick-and-go's getting them into the AM 22 on numerous occasions. Two tries and one missed conversion had AM home by one point, but what a gutsy effort from Drury. The lop sided penalty count and the man in the bin were telling factors, but something the team can readily fix.

Should the two teams meet again this season (semi/final) my money is on us.

Brad Cochrane was named P O D for Drury and was joined for an aftermatch beer by Dan Verheyen, who scored a try and was most satisfied that it will keep him from the "undy run'" at the end of the season.

A grand aftermatch, with a few laughs and broken crates. (sorry if you were hurt)

This Sat we are home to Weymoth Pressies at 1.00 and Bombay 85's at 2.45, and will be presenting a couple of blazers to a couple of men later that afternoon.

Hope to see you there to cheer on the players.
